The Patriot Motorsports ZL1 A10 10L90E Transmission Track Cooling Kit is the ultimate upgrade for your ZL1/ZLE!! This proven design solves several issues with the designs of the ZL1's transmission cooling architecture. If you have seen my videos on YouTube, you will know I am passionate about removing the transmission's cooling from the Engine Cooling Circuit. The production cooling system is designed for masses of owners who will never pass through the gates of a race track, let alone ever push their cars where the air pressure under the car is so important as we learn at speeds exceeding 100mph!
The OEM transmission cooling circuit is absurd at best! Try to follow this operational theory from the factory... the ATF leaves the transmission heading forward, passing to the passenger side of the car in a steel tube under the exhaust to the front of the engine. From here, it crosses over once more to the driver's side where it enters the top of the Engine Cooling Radiator to flow through an internal heat exchanger where it exits the bottom, then enters the driver's side of the flat Auxiliary Transmission Heat Exchanger (AuxTransHX) where the fluid travels to the passenger side. The transmission fluid now makes a complete journey alongside the full exhaust system in the tunnel to the eLSD where it goes through another heat exchanger in an effort to "cool" the differential fluid before moving forward again, passing the entire exhaust system within an inch or so, until it finally arrives back at the transmission!!
ALL IN THE NAME OF COOLING!!
The kit I have designed is extremely robust, addresses several issues and has been tested in both M6 and A10 configurations at numerous Road Course tracks across America as well as the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb event. I have also logged nearly 3,000 road miles this year without one issue or failure. I did have an outside vendor product failure at VIR a month ago where the thermostat adapter failed to open, causing the entire system to shut down... while this did not affect slow-speed drivability, it did shut my trackday down after three laps. I have since replaced that part with a new design without a thermostat, relying upon the 10L90E's own internal thermostat bypass.
Here is the new flow design and it works great!! The ATF leaves the transmission but this time heads directly to the eLSD and back forward using special -8AN to OEM adapter fittings machined by our local supplier, connecting to the original tubes and hoses. The fluid then goes to our own designed 34 tube Auxiliary Transmission Heat Exchanger, located in the passenger fender area which replaces the engine coolant AuxHX there. The flow restriction from the OEM flat HX is reduced immensely and capacity increases over one additional quart. If you have priced both the costs of an eLSD and the A10 transmission, you know the transmission is extremely expensive, thus the reason for sending the coolest fluid possible to the transmission.
During my extreme tests on-track with both myself and Jeni "double-stinting" the ZLE at Carolina Motorsports Park in back to back sessions, the ATF temperatures never exceeded 214ºF!! This is a dramatic difference from when my car was stock and my first track day at Barber Motorsports Park where my transmission temps rose to 275º causing a thermal shutdown of the car's performance. During normal driving the transmission temps hover between 140-155º which is well within the envelope designed for the 10L90E.
The added bonus of this upgrade is the front closeout panel of the ZL1 can be replaced with either the V6-flat unit or an aluminum panel we have designed. This eliminates the ducted airflow from passing through the grill opening and under the car, increasing downforce without creating more drag! This upgrade directly changes the feel of the car when on high speed sweepers and will reduce the need for larger, high-drag splitters in normal trackday driving use. This also facilitates the option to have full splitter structural mounts to any panel you wish to elevate your downforce to Jedi Levels!!
